5 Powerful Tips for True Success

What do you define as weight success?  Is it a number on the scale?  Is it a size you aspire to be?  Since January is the month we focus on your 2013 success story-- I wanted to briefly focus on the idea that while most of the weight loss industry’s ideas of success is based on achieving outer results in the area of weight loss (ripped abs, small sizes, pounds lost) true success for most people who have kept their weight off long term has been the SHIFT in who they have become from within (stronger, more confident, way better relationship with themselves) during their quest of weight mastery.

January is probably the busiest season in the weight loss industry. I probably don’t need to tell you why as you have probably experienced the “starting over” syndrome yourself in January many times. My friend lamented that it is hard to get in her gym classes in January because of all the “resolutioners” in their new spiffy matching work-out outfits. She also noted that these “resolutioners” all disappear by March!

When we Shift there is no starting over because everything that happens to us on our journey to weight mastery is a lesson that will help us becomes more masterful in the long run. This is how we achieve inner success—which is far more lasting than just focusing on a number on the scale. We lose valuable lessons when we keep starting over—what a shame!

My coaching for this week is—never “start over”—commit to yourself, your inner success and your weight release for life and steer clear of the “resolutioner” syndrome. This week I am sharing with you long-term success clues from a Shifter who has now been maintaining her  weight  release for five years. I hope her strategies for long-term success serve you.

Erin E. has been maintaining her weight release since 2008. Her are her clues--

Hi Rita-

I got to my goal weight in May 2008 (I lost 26 pounds), and I have been working on maintenance since then.

The 5 most important things that have helped me on my path to weight loss/maintenance are:

 1. I gave up on the idea that I will be perfect all the time. I have stopped making myself believe that everyone else in my life expects me to be perfect....because they don't.

I am, by nature, a perfectionist, and in other areas of my life it has been very helpful (my career is a good example of where this has served me well). Naturally, I figured that if this behavior worked so well in other areas, it would work for weight management. I was wrong - I just kept hitting that wall. The irony is that allowing myself to be LESS of a perfectionist is probably the best thing I have done along the way. Allowing for the inevitable "mistakes", instead of seeing every little slip-up as a complete and utter failure has been the most helpful thing for me. I view the "mistakes" as opportunities to learn and I keep going. I try not to dwell on past "bad" behavior. In fact, I try not to view any given behavior as "bad".

 2. I have learned what my "red flags" are.

In the past, I have lost weight and gotten to goal weight and then I seemingly wake up one day and I am 20 pounds heavier. I have battled those same pounds my whole life. My problem was that I didn't observe my behavior well enough to understand that I was off the right path until I was really headed in the wrong direction. Now, I pay attention to 3 things and if I am not doing them consistently, then I know something is going on. For me, the three things I pay attention to are: Am I writing down what I eat every day? Did I go to my favorite class at the gym on Saturday? Did I go to Church on Sunday? Of course, these will be different for everyone, but if I answer "yes" to these questions, I am doing well. If I can't answer "yes", then I spend some time thinking about why I missed doing one of these things and I commit to doing them the next week. Conversely (and this is an example of how things can come full circle), for me, what I look like on the outside is directly related to how I feel on the inside (i.e. how happy/content I am). My weight is a "red flag" for me of how I am doing emotionally and spiritually.

 3. I have a "weigh-in" day and I record it.

I need to weigh myself at least once a week. Some people say they "go by their clothes". That doesn't work for me. I can be up 10 pounds, and I would still be saying that my jeans fit great. It is not that I don't trust myself, but as they say, "numbers don't lie".

 4. Track what my daily food intake and calories.

This is a big one for me. I get out of control really fast with food if I don't record it. I exercise and I believe it is really important to a healthy lifestyle, but the fact is that you can do A LOT more damage on the food side in A LOT less time. It takes me about 5 minutes to eat 500 calories (takes about an hour of intense exercise to burn that off). I have made peace with the fact that I will have to track my food and count calories in some way for the rest of my life. For me, it is a small price to pay.

5. Getting to goal weight is the BEGINNING of the journey. Not the end.

This is my most recently learned lesson. All those "thin" people that I see all the time, it turns out that most of them are working just as hard (if not harder) than I am to maintain their figure. It doesn't come easy to very many people - for some reason, I take a great deal of comfort in that fact.

Thanks Erin and for your inspiration and insights!!! Have a shifted week everyone! No starting over!!!)

To your weight mastery success!

How to Begin your 2013 Weight Loss Success Story…

Hi there and Happy New Year!
This is going to be your best year ever in the area of weight release and mastery!  In fact it is going to be an absolute break through year!  Why?  Because you are going to leave behind the Struggle Story of the past and embrace your Success Story and Shift Weight Mastery is here to help you do it!

Beginning this month and each month after we are going to be focusing on a specific topic of weight mastery.
January’s Weight Mastery Topic: Create Your Weight Release Success Story

What is weight mastery success anyway?  Is it standing on the scale at your ideal weight?  Well, that is success but if you have ever dieted you may have seen your idea weight before.  True weight mastery success though is standing on the scale at your ideal weight and knowing you will never gain it back again and all the freedom and “peace” of mind that comes with it.  How do we get to that place?  It requires 3 specific “Shifts” .

1)      A Shift in Attitude

2)      A Shift in Willingness

3)      A Shift in Consistency

This week I am going to look at a Shift in Attitude.
I “Took Over” the Mind of a Thin Person

I want to share with you a really amazing Shift that happened for me while I was still struggling with my weight.  In a way, this experiment I made was the real start of my SHIFT to letting go of 40lbs and my freedom from the TYRANNY of Fat Thinking.
What did I do?  I took over the mind of my best friend.

You see, my best friend, Susan, had always been thin.  For years I watched her be one of those people who wanted to exercise, pushed the plate away with ease, and would indulge in good food but in moderate portions.

As much as I loved Susan, I was envious of the ease with which she walked the world in a thin, toned body and was free from the concerns of those of us less fortunate.  Those of us who were WEIGHT STRUGGLERS, who thought about what they were going to eat, what they ate and what they should and shouldn’t eat all of the time.  Those of us weighted down with worrying about how we looked, what we weighed, how we felt, how hard it was…all the time.  Those of us with not only FAT THINKING but a FAT ATTITUDE  to match.

So one day I said, “To hell with it!  I am tired of living in my head, where things are so boring and predictable and sadly the same all the time.  I am going to live in Susan’s head.  For one day I am going to pretend to be her and wake up with her thoughts and see how things go”.

I had gotten this idea from playing tennis.  I was a bad tennis player but a friend who was coaching me said,” just serve as if you were Chris Everett instead of Rita-the-person-who-can’t-serve and see what happens.”  And guess what, the moment I pretended to be Chris Everett I stepped up and served a fabulous, well crafted serve of a pro!  Woo hoo!!!

THIN FOR A DAY
So here I was now waking up in the morning as a naturally thin person, with an effortlessly thin attitude. The day started off completely differently.  Instead of waking up and talking myself out of going to exercise, my thin attitude said, “good I get to go move my body before I start my day—let’s go!”.

When thoughts of food came up I would dismiss them, “I am a thin person, I think about what I am going to eat when I get hungry and at no other time”.  So when it came time to eat I thought about what would be good for me and I ate as much as I needed and when I had had enough I pushed the plate away, just as Susan had for so many years when we ate together.  I got up from the table feeling light and taken care of.  Wow, I thought this was revolutionary.
True, there were many times of the day when my FAT THINKING reared its head.   Thoughts like,

-This is hard

-I hate exercise

-I want a snack lets go to the kitchen

-I’m stressed, let’s eat
But now these thoughts were more clearly just the old tired thoughts of fat thinking and not REALITY!

Taking over the mind of a thin person really helped me see how I needed to change my attitude and stop believing I was a failure—which I kept creating as my reality, and instead adopt an attitude of SUCCESS—releasing weight and being an effortlessly thin person is easy.  This started me on my way to success and now it’s your TURN!
How about you—how can you let go of the old FAT THINKING and adopt a successfully thin ATTITUDE  for 2013??

HERE’S SOME COACHING:
Pick an effortlessly thin person in your life and pretend that you are them for the day.  See the difference in your new thinking from your fat thinking—how will those thoughts have to change for you to be successful in the long run?

Start with attitude and everything follows.
Have a successful, healthy and SHIFTED 2013.

Happy New Year!!!

Merry Christmas Eve!
Wise men or not the average weight gain over the holidays is 5-7 pounds!  One year long before I Shifted I gained 25 during the season!  Don’t feel bad, my kids and I calculated that if Santa ate just ½ a cookie per home and we allowed for the calories he burned getting out of the sleigh and hoisting himself and a few presents  down the chimney—he would still gain over 400lbs!  So this year he gets only carrots at our home and a Sugar Mastery Hypnosis session—sorry Santa but let’s stop the insanity, eh?

I know you have a million things to do today and so I have just included a short 6 minute Christmas video with 4 cognitive tips to help you stay in the weight maintain or weight release zone this holiday week.

LET’S LOOK AT YOUR BEHIND!
As we close in on the end of 2012 it's a great time to think about your weight and health goals for 2013. However, before you start to focus on looking ahead, I'd like to encourage you to take a few minutes to look back. Yes, that’s right look at your “behind”-- those 12 months that were known as 2012.   How was your “behind” looking this year?

THE LITTLE “BEHIND”
I invite you first to focus on what you accomplished with your “behind”—even if you feel like you didn’t accomplish anything.  If you think your behind was a big, fat nothing-- you are cheating yourself and your “behind”—honor your “behind” no matter how great or small you feel your accomplishments were!!  This way you learn, this way you move forward by learning from your behind and not denying it.

When I struggled with my weight I was always looking at my real behind in the mirror and cringing—why can’t this go away?  What I should have been doing, and never did until I made my own SHIFT, was really look behind me at the actions and behaviors that moved me towards my goals as well as the habits and thinking that keep me staring at my big behind!!
I challenge you right now to think about what you accomplished in 2012 and decide how you are going to celebrate what you have achieved!!  That’s right celebrate even the small wins, because all of the small wins strung together equal a victorious behind.

As you think about 2012 it's also important to think about the things you wanted to accomplish that just didn't seem to happen. What is most important to know is why these goals didn't get accomplished. What you may discover is that it might not have been the right time for that goal or maybe fear got in your way OR maybe you didn't have the accountability that you really needed to ensure you stayed focused and on track.

What I have found is that while the basics of weight management are fairly straightforward, the challenge is really learning to keep yourself inspired and motivated to move forward doing these “basics”.   Most people lack the proper accountability and support that they need to follow through to success.

Long term permanent success is just that, long term.  We need the mindset to keep ourselves going strong.   It can be really difficult to stay focused with so many distractions these days. We all know how to diet and lose weight but what Shift is about is long term weight management—not a short-term diet.  What I have noticed is that most people find it difficult to know what actions to take to get you to where you want to go for the long term.

That is why I created the Shift Monthly Mastery Membership Program—check out you can get started on a break-though 2013 here:
http://www.shiftweightmastery.com/monthlymembership.html
YOUR BIG “BEHIND”
At some day out there in the future when you are looking back at your “BIG BEHIND”, that’s right all of your life’s accomplishments…do you want to look back and see that all of your actions led you to being happy and healthy, slim and trim, living the life of your dreams?  Or do you want to look back and see a lot of “hopes” and “try’s” and plenty of “I didn’t have the time” and a bushel of “it’s too hard” that led to your living a life that never really got you where you knew you had the potential to go because you never really got started or kept at it?

Am I being a bit tough?  Hell yeah!  I want you to take 2013 to the next level—getting to your ideal weight, confidently staying there, and really living the life of your dreams!  If you are already there—I applaud you.  If you are on your way—great!!
That is why as you look at your behind and think about what you want to accomplish in 2013 that you consider joining the new Shift Monthly Mastery membership program.  I have created this program to give you the ongoing support, motivation and education and cognitive support (hypnosis) that you need to achieve your weight goals and, more importantly stay there.

Whether you will decide to enroll in the Monthly Mastery membership or not I have made a coaching video that will give you the 4 keys you will need to have to achieve your weight goals this coming year.  Check it out!
http://www.shiftweightmastery.com/monthlymembership.html
So here’s to your behind!  Celebrate it, learn from it, and let it guide your vision for what you want to create for the healthy, slim and trim year ahead!!  Happy Holidays!

Shift Weekly: Think this…not that!!

What is going to get you through the holiday season in a successful slim and trim way?  Your thoughts of course!
As Shifters we know how powerful our mind is and that all thoughts precede action so successful actions (ie. making healthy choices) spring from thoughts of success.

The holiday season poses challenges though and because of stress and added external stimulus we tend to fall back into old thinking patterns or FAT THINKING—the kind of thinking that causes us to gain weight over the holidays.

Holiday Fat Thinking
Here are some examples of old familiar FAT THINKING favorites.

-It’s too hard to be healthy in the holiday season!

-I can’t resist all the holiday temptations!

-Everyone else is stuffing themselves…why can’t I?

-I’m too busy to exercise--these presents need wrapping!

-I just polish off this box of See’s so there won’t be any left to tempt me.

-There is so much food in the house!

-There is so much food in the office!

-There is so much food at these holiday parties!

-I’ll just wait until the New Year!

-Did someone say Egg Nog shooters? Yipeeeeeeee!

AND THE DEEPEST FAT THOUGHT OF THEM ALL IS…
Often though the deepest fat thought is one that we may not even be conscious of but is the one that causes us to always be in a “struggle”.  And that fat thought is….drum roll please…

I am a person who struggles with my weight and food and exercise AND I AM TRYING not to be a person who struggles with my weight and food and exercise especially during the holidays!
The problem that we have when we “try” to lose weight is that in our minds we are a fat person trying not to eat and forcing ourselves to exercise.  Thinking this always puts us in a place of struggling against ourselves, and when we do that, we never win.

MY COACHING: Shift out of seeing yourself as a person who struggles with their weight and is trying not to struggle…and replace that with:

I am a person who is SHIFTING and am on a powerful journey of weight release especially through the holidays!

Click the link below to read more about:
- how adopting a mastery attitude is the only way to be successful in the long run
- how there are 4 key things that people who fail do not do
-the 4 things that all successful weight releasers do!
-And how I found out the hard way for myself when I made my own Shift!

Shift Weekly: Five Fit Gift Faves

Join us this coming Saturday, December 1st from 9-10:30am PST for our next Shift Saturday ONLINE CLASS
Mindful versus Mindless and Emotional Eating: How to Show Up for Yourself
3 steps you can take to avoid or bounce back fast from bingeing

Hi Shifters,

Happy Cyber Monday!!! Did Thanksgiving tucker you out?  I’m bushed!  Now my head is spinning with the idea of venturing out to holiday shop.
If you skipped the shopping crowds at the mall this last weekend and are looking for healthy holiday gifts for loved ones (even yourself) here are some “healthy” favorites from me and other members of the Shift Community that you can find online.
1.     Polar Heart Rate Monitor Watches—(Mickey’s Favorite) these handy watches will monitor your heart rate, time your work outs, and show how many calories you burned during your work outs.  Costs average 80-250 dollars depending on style etc.  Available at Amazon and other online retailers.

2.     Fit Bit—(Julie’s Favorite) This teeny little device is something you can wear like a pedometer and it measures everything: steps, sleep, calories burned during exercise and rest, etc. downloads to your computer and you can log on to see all of your data day by day.  I could see this becoming an addiction.  Cost—around 100 dollars. http://www.fitbit.com/

 3.     The Healthy Eating and Weight Management Book and Workbook by Dorene Robinson (Rita's favorite)This book is a favorite of trainers, dieticians and health clubs.  It is the best book out there as far as I am concerned as to how to put together a healthy approach to weight release.  Dorene has a great writing style and uses a lot of similar principles as I do. A very great information packed read with a workbook to put it all together.

4.     The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg  If you want to know why you do what you do and why it’s hard not to do it—then this is a book for you!  One of my favorite reads this year.

5.     Hungry Girls’ Supermarket Survival Guide  This handy little book that fits into a purse or bag is a great gift for those friends who have a hard time navigating the grocery store in a healthy way.  A fabulous stocking stuffer.

BIG HOLIDAY SHOPPING TIP—Eat something before you go so you don’t get stranded with your blood sugar levels dropping!

Shift Weekly: The Holiday Spell--DON'T Sucuum!

Happy Thanksgiving!

I am so grateful for your participation in the Shift Community!  Over the years that I have been a clinical hypnotherapist, helping people SHIFT out of Fat Thinking into Thin Thinking, I have had the honor to work with such amazing, intelligent, insightful, warm and open people—thank you for allowing me to serve you.

Now on to Thanksgiving Mind Strategies!!  Thanksgiving for many is not actually the hardest day to remain true to your Shift for many.  Here is a 7 minute coaching session on TG that I made a few years back (if you need some good pointers and inspiration) –it follows me over a whole Thanksgiving Day where my challenge was to consume 1550 calories or below—we called it Thanksgiving 15-50! Check it out here:

Weight Mastery Thanksgiving Coaching Video

GAK FRIDAY and “It’s the HOLIDAYS!” THINKING

Now let’s talk about the real holiday challenge.  Not Thanksgiving Day but the day AFTER Thanksgiving, what some call Black Friday—I call GAK FRIDAY! (for those of you unfamiliar with the term Gak it means the super refined food that contain waaaaay more sugar, salt, and fats than natural foods).

Gak Friday is a challenge for many because we now have all of that TGT food hanging around.  On top of that we begin holiday shopping and giving.  There is food everywhere!  AND on top of THAT this very strange and mysterious thing happens on the midnight of Thanksgiving.  The internal holiday bell chimes and all of our minds gets sucked into this weird VORTEX called “why not…it’s the holidays!”

Yes, all of a sudden this mental phenomina called “it’s the holidays” descends upon us en masse and we find ourselves in a much more vulnerable and open state to eating more calories, exercising less and believing we have no choice but to surrender as a victim to this overwhelming force while it is surging and then wait again until January 1st when the bell chimes again and the spell of “it’s the Holiday’s” recedes as quickly as it began and we are left in the wake of the aftermath of devastation and destruction, weight gain, struggle, and disappointment of “how did I let it all go?”.

So I am here to tell you now---DO NOT LET IT ALL GO.

Prepare for the “It’s the Holidays” surge like you would prepare for a Level  5 hurricane.

-Plan ahead for success: have a vision of what you will look like on January 1st because you have kept releasing weight through the holidays—make it a fun and enticing image.

-Think through what you will and won’t allow in your house this season.  80 percent of success is based on stimulus control.  If it’s going to be a problem (and you know if it’s going to be a problem) don’t let it in your house—or OFFICE.  There is a place called a FOOD BANK and they will happily receive your food gift items.

-Know what your calorie budget is for release and MAINTENANCE.  That’s right—if you know what you can consume and not gain weight but just maintain at least you will be that much further ahead come January first.  Those of you who have gone through the Shift Weight Mastery Process—your maintenance number is in your Shift Book on page 23 or 24 (depending on when you Shifted).  If you have not made the Shift yet email me and I can let you know how to find this out.

-Make a plan to move—think through a way to walk every day for 10 minutes at least.  Walking is something you can do anytime, anywhere.  If you walk 10-20 minutes a day you will be setting yourself up to burn away the little “extras” over the holidays.

-Listen TO YOUR SHIFT CDS!!!  They will keep your mind focused.

-Have some fun but lower calorie treats on hand so you don’t feel deprived.  Here is a link to Hungry Girls 2012 holiday list—check it out!

Okay that’s a starting point—more to come as we head through the holidays.  I believe in you and know you want more than anything to stay present and healthy through the season.  So take this time out and prepare to be successful now.  Give yourself the present of being present!!

Take a Shift Breath and here’s to YOUR Successful, “Shifted” Holiday Season 2012!!
